MLM Success Secrets Decoded Part 4-Is This a Pyramid or What?
If you’ve missed the first 3 parts of this series, I highly suggest that you go back and catch up. We’ve been taking down more superstitions and tall tales than the guys from MythBusters! And today’s post is not going to be any different. In this installment of MLM Success Secrets Decoded, we’re taking on the question that’s sent many reps and distributors running for the hills, crying for their Mommies and Daddies.
You know which one I’m talking about. You’ve just finished sharing your business opportunity with the person, you’ve shared the dream of what you’re working to do for your family, and once you’re done, they look up at you and say “Is this one of those pyramid schemes?” All the wind is immediately taken out of your sails, and you resign yourself to another night of nobody joining your team. All your dreams of mlm success just came to a screeching halt, because you have NO IDEA how to answer this question.
Of course your upline’s showed you how this isn’t one of those pyramid schemes multiple times, but you still just haven’t caught on to be able to explain it yourself. Or maybe your upline hasn’t explained it to you. Either way, I honestly laugh out loud when someone asks me that question. And, to be quite honest, it happens to me so rarely that it’s almost like a Bigfoot sighting when I hear it! But as a newbie, you will more than likely hear this question more than once on your way to mlm success, so I should probably share a few secrets with you on how to handle this one, right?
MLM Success Secrets Revealed-What IS a Pyramid Scheme?
Before you can ever begin to answer if your business is a pyramid scheme or not, shouldn’t you know what a pyramid scheme IS first? It’s actually pretty simple. Ever heard of a guy named Bernie Madoff? What he did is the clearest example of a pyramid scheme I can give you. For those of you who missed 2008, Madoff orchestrated the biggest Ponzi scheme since Social Security. Oops, did I say that out loud? Anyway, Bernie “Madoff” with an estimated 65 Billion dollars of his clients money. Now if this is the mlm success secret you’ve been waiting for, you’re in the wrong place.
Bernie promised his clients an absolutely AMAZING return for investing with him. Then, rather than invest their money, he put it ALL into one bank account. Then, when it was time to pay out money to any of the old clients, he used the collected money from the new clients, plus whatever was still in the account. In the meantime, he and his family lived it up with their investors money, counting on the money coming in from new clients to make it all “appear” legit.
But, as happens with all pyramid schemes, the flow of new money at the top slows down or stops (COUGH Social Security COUGH), and people start wanting to take their money out and invest in other things. Only, there is no money. Houston, we have a problem! In this case, our problem is worth over 65 BILLION dollars, and impacted people from Steven Spielberg to Elie Wiesel to your next door neighbor. If this is what it takes to achieve mlm success, I don’t want any part of it!
MLM Success Secrets Decoded-So If it’s Not a Pyramid…
The good thing is, it doesn’t. One of the clear and most obvious differences between a pyramid scheme and a legit company is the absence or presence of a legitimate product or service being sold. So if you’re exploring an opportunity where there is no product or service being sold, or that product or service is of dubious value or worth, you might be involving yourself in a pyramid scheme, and not a legitimate mlm offering you a true shot at success.
In mlm, the financial success of the “guy at the top” of the pyramid is dependent on the financial success of the “guy at the bottom” of the pyramid. Just like the sales rep/sales manager relationship of any traditional business, the more people that you help make money, the more transactions that you “override,” the more money you make.
Simple enough concept, yet here is why people mistake our industry for an illegal pyramid scheme. Sometimes, overexcited reps represent the opportunity to make money as a GUARANTEE to make money. At the same time, just like some of Madoff’s clients, people hear what they want to hear. Many of those people were smart enough to know that his company couldn’t live up to the returns he claimed, but they gave him their money anyway.
Why? Because who hasn’t THOUGHT about winning the lottery? Who hasn’t considered making a whole lotta money for not a lotta work? Everyone thinks about it, but in ANY industry, the only people who make it big are the ones with the vision to see it and the guts to implement it, period. But in the MLM industry, unlike a pyramid scheme, and unlike most jobs, you actually get paid to help the greatest number of people achieve more success.
Stop and think for a second. If you’re an employee, you get paid what the allotted amount for your position is, NEVER what you’re worth. Trust me, I’ve been in recruiting for over 15 years-not only have I seen the pay bands for positions, I’ve been the person to CREATE them for some companies. Once you reach the top of the band, there are three options-promote you, fire you or convince you that you’re not good enough to get a better paying job. You can fight me on that if you want, but please understand that I’ve seen behind the curtain, and I know what the Mighty Oz actually looks like.
Ask yourself this question. Wherever you work at, has your boss, or anyone in your work “upline” ever had this conversation with you? “Bob, you’ve got great potential here at Boye, Wekrewem and Howe, so here’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to take you under my wing, show you everything I know, and teach you step by step how to be in position to match, or even exceed every accomplishment I’ve ever done here. All I ask in return is that you listen to what it is that I’m going to teach you, apply it, and work on developing yourself. Can you handle that?”
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, Yeah right!! But this is not a Corporate America rant (that’s tomorrow), so I will get back to the point. MLM success is not based on juggling cups in the air, and seeing how long you can do that until they crash. It’s based on locking arms with people, figuring out what problems they’re trying to solve, and then digging in with them and HELPING them to solve the problem.
Don’t get confused, though, it’s also not about you solving their problems for them either. You’re not a shrink, or a bartender, or some strange combination of the two. You’re there as a help and guide, sort of like Yoda, only not as short and green. You’re also not there to promise them the moon. Most MLM opportunities are good enough on their own, without you adding in your “personal flair” to make it sound better.
What do I mean? It’s ok to tell people about the top earner in your company, that’s exciting. but tell them about the lady who made an extra thousand dollars last month so she could catch up on her house payment. Tell them about the college kid who made an extra couple hundred bucks to buy books. Talk to your prospects about the mlm success of the disgruntled recruiter who was tired of being jerked around by corporate America and decided to…oh wait…that’s me…sorry, got a little excited there, but you get the point, right?
In the process of helping people, you’ll meet people who will make the big money on your team, be thankful for them. But be thankful for the single mom who’s able to make a regular job income so that she can work from home, and raise her son.
Be thankful for the college kid, who because of associating with some positive people for the first time in his life, in addition to making some money, gets his life together. be thankful for the guy you said hello to in a mall, and because you gave him a compliment and asked him if he was open to a business opportunity because he seemed sharp, decided not to go home and kill himself as he’d planned on doing.
The true secret of mlm success is that you don’t know whose life you’re going to impact by sharing a dream and a vision for something better with, and you certainly don’t have any control over how it will impact them. All you have control over is your attitude and your action. So if you’re an MLMer, commit to yourself that tomorrow, you’re going to be a better MLMer than you were today.
If you’re a parent, be a better parent tomorrow. If you’re a student, be better than you were today. Because at the end of the day, to me that’s what the MLM industry has been about. Forcing me to be a better person by focusing less on what I want, and more on what other people want.
And if you’re not an MLMer, and you’re looking for someone to lock arms with, to help you find a solution to your financial problem, and mentor you towards true success in your life, I’d be honored to work with you directly. Take the first step towards making a new friend by clicking here.
